The History of Abstraction – 3 evening lectures in March

Modern Art Chester is excited to launch the first of many lectures and workshops planned for 2023, with a 3-part lecture series on the History of Abstraction.

The series will be led by Juliet Cook, a Social Art Historian, curator, gallerist and owner of Modern Art Chester.

Juliet will explore the history of abstraction within art history over 3 evenings in March and set in the lounge at oH (11 Lower Bridge St., Chester). Enjoy a glass of wine or two, listen and be inspired by the story of Abstraction; the movements and artists who inspired and created it and how it has shaped the art we have in our homes today.

The series will take a chronological approach and explain the difference between the two components of Abstraction – Geometric and Expressionism.

Lecture 01 on March 2nd will explore the major influences of abstraction including Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Romanticism and Surrealism. This will lead into the work of Cezanne, the pivotal figure in modern painting, and finish with the Cubist style and distillation of shape and movement.

Lecture 02 on March 9th will discuss abstraction’s first significant movement, concentrating on how Piet Mondrian abstracted forms to create his signature geometric style and how this iconic approach influences the interior design choices in our homes today.

Lecture 03 on March 16th explores the main artists within Abstract Expressionism, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko in particular. Juliet will explain how the influences of major themes in art history pushed these iconic artists into extraordinary areas of colour and emotions within their work.

Each lecture will include time for discussion, questions, exploration of contemporary artists working in abstraction today and a glass of wine or two!

£20 per evening or £15 (£45) for all 3 (available to be booked as single lectures or as a bundle of 3).
5.30pm for a 6pm start and the evening will run until 8.30pm.
