Workshops 2023

Come and join us at one of the following workshops, running through June and July 2023.

Modern Art Chester’s studio space in Lower Bridge Street provides the perfect venue for practical arts workshops. Formally a printmaking workshop, it has natural light, space, and benefits from a quiet location off the main street.

We are pleased to welcome Mary Hill, Debbie Nairn, Jack Few, Anne Byrne and Janet Webb to the list of creatives who will lead the workshops this spring and summer. We are aiming to offer a continuous program of workshops through the autumn, more to follow on those dates and including 4-6 week courses.

June 8th – Photography Workshop – £55 – (1pm – 4pm)

The theme of the workshop is ‘Visual Poetry Photography’. It’s all about creating images with simple everyday things from nature, the home, objects with meaning to you, fabric, even an old photograph or notebook and telling a story without words.

Mary Hill will teach you how to make your mark using the flatlay technique, effective layout and design and the use of simple editing techniques with snapseed and lightroom. This workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to develop their photography skills and learn to create beautiful and meaningful images.

Suitable with a phone camera or DSLR/Mirrorless camera

June 22nd – Beginners Techniques – How to create texture and join clay – £75 – (10.30am – 4pm)

Whole day workshop with leading ceramic artist Debbie Nairn, exploring the techniques of creating texture in clay and joining it to make a piece (create a Fish!) – all materials provided.

July 6th / 13th / 20th – Costume and Life Drawing Evening Classes – £38 single session (£35 for 3 as a bundle) – (6pm – 9pm)

Janet Webb has been an artist, lecturer and teacher for many years and is well known in and around Chester. Join her and a professional model for 3 evenings of life drawing techniques, exploration of the form and of clothing on the body.

July 13th / 27th – Landscape Painting in Oil – For Beginners – £75 (10-4pm)

This exciting all day workshop will offer an introduction into painting a landscape of your choice in oil paints.

Join practicing artist and semi-finalist of Sky Landscape Artist of the Year 2023, Anne Byrne for this inspiring one-day work-shop. During the workshop, Anne will explore and explain how to identify and see key aspects of a landscape that can bring energy and movement to create exciting and powerful works. You’ll then be encouraged to use this knowledge to create a compelling piece of art during the workshop. Aimed at beginner, keen enthusiast or for those who have never used oil paints previously. Students will need to bring materials.
